Complex Behaviours Training

Organization: Autism Yukon
United Way Yukon is funding Autism Yukon to develop a three-day training workshop on complex negative behaviours of individuals on the autism spectrum. Autism Yukon will provide 25 participants from 4 local service organizations an opportunity to participate in the workshop. Autism Yukon is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting families and individuals living with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Funding provided by United Way Yukon is supporting volunteer recruitment and the Big Brothers, Big Sisters Yukon Mentorship Program. Big Brothers Big Sisters Yukon facilitates life-changing relationships that inspire and empower children and youth to reach their potential, both as individuals and citizens. Our mission is that every child who wants a mentor, has one. We do this by pairing children and youth between the ages of 6 and 18 with a positive adult role model who provides friendship, guidance and FUN! We currently offer our programs in Whitehorse, Dawson City and Watson Lake.

Organization: Blood Ties Four Directions
Funds from United Way Yukon are supporting weekly group counselling, anger management, communication and stress management for approximately 50 regular clients. Blood Ties Four Directions Centre is Yukon’s information and support centre for people living with HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis C. United Way funding supports naturopathic care to clients of the organization who may not have access to regular health care.

Summer Job Coach, Waterfront Crew

Organization: Challenge Disability Resource Group
Funds from United Way Yukon has allowed Challenge to hire an Employment Coordinator to support crews of up to four or five people who provide maintenance services along the Whitehorse waterfront. Challenge assists people with disabilities to become active in their community, by learning job skills and entering the job market.

Unite Way Yukon is providing funding for several training sessions for parent and caregivers. The sessions will provide training using the Hanen program to parent and caregivers of children with special needs. The Child Development Centre works with families and community members to provide therapeutic services and support the developmental needs of all Yukon children from birth to kindergarten.

United Way Yukon Funding is supporting a horseback ridging program for people living with physical and intellectual disabilities. The Freedom Trails Therapeutic Riding Association provides a therapeutic horseback riding program for people with a disability. There are over 20 volunteers each year helping out during lessons. Lessons run weekly for a 10-week session. Freedom Trails also use our riding simulator for rained out lessons in the off-season.

Camp Raven

Organization: Learning Disabilities Association of Yukon
United Way Yukon funding is helping to support camps for children with learning difficulties which combines literacy tutoring is included with wilderness activities. The Learning Disabilities Association of Yukon (LDAY) is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing awareness of learning differences, and supporting children, youth and adults with learning difficulties or disabilities. LDAY provides leadership through advocacy, education, programs and services. Funding provided is used to host day camps for children with learning difficulties (academic, social or emotional) during summer vacation and March Break.

My Brain is Plastic (Presentation)

Theatre Funding from United Way Yukon is supporting the theatre’s community engagement activities. This includes the presentation of a play about trauma, addictions and self harming by youth at risk to audiences made up of youth at risk and the public at large. The Nakai Theatre is a non-profit professional theatre company dedicated to the development of live theatre that is relevant to northern audiences.
Lateral Violence Workshop
Whitehorse
Organization: Kwanlin Dün First Nation
Lateral Violence is a pattern of behaviour that has its roots in a minority group’s experience of racism and oppression. Lateral violence is directed other members of the group, and includes many things: gossip, put downs, backstabbing, bullying, undermining, blaming, shaming. This project will see 6-8 Yukon youth hired and mentored to develop a workshop with the goal of exposing and reducing lateral violence. These youth will then deliver the workshop to other youth in the community.

Community Kitchen and Support for New Moms

Organization: Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre 
United Way Yukon funding is supporting the community kitchen, a low barrier weekend evening drop in program for women to eat and support one another. Funds from United Way Yukon are also supporting the Centre’s Parent Child Mother Goose and Mothering your Baby 1st Year programs for new moms.
The Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre is a safe and respectful space where women connect with each other, access support and services and work together to create positive change for women and the community. The Women’s Centre is committed to promoting women’s equality and well-being by raising awareness, educating, networking and collaborating with Government and Non-Government Organizations.

Improved Nutrition Program
Watson Lake
Organization: Watson Lake Food Bank and Soup Kitchen Society
Funding supports a weekly soup kitchen that provides soup sandwiches, fruits vegetables and food baskets to between 20 to 30 families in need. The Watson Lake Food Bank and Soup Kitchen Society serve those in need in the Watson Lake area.

Youth Centre Dinner Program

Organization: Youth of Today Society
United Way Yukon funds provides youth attending the Centre with one hot lunch daily from Monday to Friday. Youth are also able to use the kitchen and learn cooking skils. The Youth Of Today Society works with high risk youth developing youth programs that have a positive impact on their lives.

Poverty and Homelessness Action Week, Whitehorse Connects and the Outreach Computer Program

United Way Yukon funding is supporting Poverty and Homelessness Action Week, Whitehorse Connects, and a computer outreach program that teaches basic computer literacy skills to marginalized people in Dawson and Whitehorse. It runs for 16 weeks and is expected to support 20 to 30 people a week. The Yukon Learn Society is a not-for-profit agency whose mandate is to help Yukon adults improve their literacy, numeracy and computer skills.
